Sticky Burr: Adventures in Burrwood Forest by John Lechner
Sticky Burr Candlewick, 2007
56 pages
Ages 6-10 years

Welcome to Burrwood Forest! This is my village, where I live with all the other burrs. We spend our days gathering food and building houses out of sticks.

Living in Burrwood Forest isn’t all that bad. After all, there are lots and lots of little Burrs to play with, and there are daisies and sweet potatoes and berries in the summer and…well...for the most part, life is good. But little burrs are supposed to be prickly and tough and difficult to deal with, and Sticky Burr is anything but. Well, he is prickly and difficult to deal with if he’s stuck to the bottom of your foot or caught in a bird’s feathers or a squirrel’s tail, but, on the whole, Sticky Burr prefers the finer things in life, like art and music and the quiet companionship of his friends.

So how does a cute, prickly little burr become a hero? It all starts when Sticky Burr and his best friend Draffle the Dragon Fly get chased into a legendary tree by a swarm of angry honey bees. Much to their surprise, deep inside the tree is a colony of lost, frightened and extremely discouraged fireflies. With the help of Sticky Burr and Draffle, the fireflies are led to freedom! Meanwhile, back at the Burr village, a pack of wild dogs uncharacteristically terrorizes trees and homes. Will Sticky Burr make it back to the village in time? And if he does, will he be able to save them?
