Looking at Jazz: America's Art Form Print

Library to Host Jazz SeriesThe Hughes Main Library is hosting a scholar-led film and discussion series called Looking at Jazz: America’s Art Form on the fourth Wednesdays between March and July, 2008. Looking at Jazz explores the cultural and social history of jazz as it developed as an art form in the United States.


The next program in the series will be Harlem and the Jazz Age on Wednesday, April 23 at 6:30p.

Jazz Vocalists

Dr. Matt Olson will lead a discussion about the vocalists who made an impact on the history of jazz. The film Lady Day: The Many Faces of Billie Holiday will be shown.

The Jazz Swing Era
Wednesday, June 25, 2008 | 6:30p - 8:30p

Dr. Matt Olson will lead a discussion about the swing era in jazz history. The film Benny Goodman: Adventures in the Kingdom of Swing will be shown.

Latin Jazz and Jazz as an International Music

Dr. Matt Olson will lead a discussion about Latin Jazz and other International jazz forms. The film A Night in Havana: Dizzie Gillespie in Cuba will be shown.

About the scholars:

Stephen Michelman is associate professor of philosophy at Wofford College, where he has been teaching for the past 11 years. First exposed to live jazz as a teenager in the jazz clubs of Greenwich Village in New York City, he teaches a class in jazz history and in jazz performance for beginners. Michelman plays jazz guitar and has performed in a variety of settings.

Matt Olson is Assistant Professor of Saxophone and Director of Jazz Studies at Furman University. His professional work includes performances with Doc Severinsen, Lou Rawls, Johnny Mathis, Aretha Franklin, the Temptations, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Jazz Ensemble. Olson serves as instructor of saxophone for the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. He is a member of the International Association of Jazz Educators.
