Visiting Poet Speaks to Youth and Adult Audiences
In recognition of National Poetry Month.

After speaking to busloads of middle school students in the morning, visiting poet and publisher Kwame Alexander will share his trademark engaged storytelling and performance poetry with an adult audience at 7:00p on Tuesday, April 8 at the Hughes Main Library.

Alexander, an award winning producer of literary programs, has published ten books, including Tough Life: The Life and Death of Tupak Shakur, Do the Write Thing: Seven Steps to Publishing Success, and Dancing Naked on the Floor: Poems and Essays. A young adult book, Crush: Love Poems, is his most recent. In addition to his poetry, Alexander has written for television and the stage and has been dubbed a "phenom” by the Charleston City Paper.

Alexander’s programs will be free and open to the public. He will be available to sign books following the program.

Volunteer Spotlight
The Greenville County Library System is fortunate to have a generous number of loyal, dedicated volunteers. This spring the library is recognizing more than 150 active volunteers who have collectively contributed over 13,000 volunteer hours to the library. Special recognition is given to three volunteers who have each contributed more than 1000 volunteer hours:

ImageLorraine Brill (pictured right) - Mrs. Brill has been a regular volunteer at the W. Jack Greer Branch in Mauldin since August, 2002. She currently volunteers four afternoons a week and has accumulated 1,726 hours of volunteer service.

Betty Monahan - Ms. Monahan is a former library employee of many years who began her volunteer service upon her retirement from the library in 2002. Since then she has been assisting the South Carolina Room at the Hughes Main Library, where she has completed 1,550 volunteer hours.

Al Isaak - Mr. Isaak started volunteering with the library in April, 2005. He has been a regular face at the Hughes Main Library, where he divides his time between the South Carolina Room and Technical Services. He has contributed 1,093 volunteer hours.
The library offers thanks to these and to all of our past and current volunteers. Our volunteers contribute to vital roles throughout the Library System. For more information about volunteer opportunities at any library location, contact Amy Pecht, Volunteer Coordinator, at 242-5000 x2286.
