The Poinsett Bridge, built in 1820, on present day State Highway #42, near the Boy Scout camp, Old Indian, was once a part of the state road leading from Charleston to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The bridge commissioned by Joel R. Poinsett, stretches 130 feet over Little Gap Creek and features a remarkable 14-foot Gothic arch. Most historians believe the bridge to have been designed by Robert Mills.
