In 1858, this Greek Revival building made of brick and stucco was constructed on land bought by the church from C.J. Elford. Architect Samuel Sloan designed this structure with six Ionic columns supporting a large central pediment and spire, as well as numerous steps ascending to three double glass entrance doors. In 1974, due to First Baptist Church's growth, most of the congregation moved to a new and bigger building on Cleveland Street. Those members who remained behind took the name Downtown Baptist Church.
