In 1820, St. James' Mission established the first organized religious body in Greenville. Soon afterwards, in 1825, the first church was built on land given by Vardry McBee, and in 1828, Bishop Nathaniel Bowen consecrated the church as Christ Church. The present building, constructed in 1852-54, is the oldest church building in Greenville, displaying Gothic architecture in its greatest example. The graveyard surrounding the church is the burying grounds for many of Greenville's most distinguished leaders. Among those is a former Governor of South Carolina, many war heroes, and "Greenville's Father," Vardry McBee.
