Glamorous girls of all ages decked out in feather boas, pretty hats, and plenty
of pink and purple flocked to the Hughes Main Library on May 22 to partake
in the “Fancy Nancy Ice Cream Social”. After a reading of Fancy
Nancy, we enjoyed Nancy’s favorite treat – parfaits, and played “Pin
the Jewel on the Tiara”, “Feed the Posh Puppy”, and other
games. We made our own fancy princess wands and ended the program by dancing
around to “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”. We had such a marvelous
time, that we decided to repeat the program in the Fall!

At two recent Musical Jamboree programs at the Hughes Main Library preschoolers
enjoyed wearing crowns and tiaras while listening to stories and songs about
princes and princesses. Afterwards we shared music, instruments and bubbles.
This program is open to children from 18 months to 4 years of age.

The Cinco de Mayo celebration at the Hughes Main Library was quite a success.
Our special guest, Señor Vásquez, danced to Mexican folkloric
music, and we had a great time following along in his steps. Then, we played
Memory, Pin the Tail on the Donkey, and the Mexican Hat Dance. Many of the
participants made a Mexican flag and enjoyed a few treats. They especially
liked the galletas Marias with cajeta (cookies with caramel).
There was a grand drawing for a bilingual book at the end of the fiesta,
and each child received a Spanish/English dictionary and a “Read” bracelet.
Everyone left with little gifts and smiles on their faces.

Ruby had heard of Chinese School. It was held on Saturdays which was a bad idea. The building was cold and dark. A fire-breathing dragon lived in the dungeon. The teachers were former prison guards from China. They served snacks of roasted snakes. Children who forgot their homework were turned into crickets.

The scary thing about girls is that they are not boys. Most girls are
no good at robbery and mayhem. They can’t punch but they can kick, which
hurts. They skip rope too fast. They are boring.

Friday, June 5, 10:00a-11:00a
Mauldin (W. Jack Greer) Branch, Outside
Calling all Dog Trainers! Does your dog have aspirations of fame? Does he
show off every chance he gets? Jumping, twirling, doing back flips? Does
she spend hours in front of the mirror admiring her beautiful bushy tail; her
strong, graceful legs; her elegantly long schnoz? If so, then you should come
on down for the Dog Days of Summer! On June 5th Mauldin Library (otherwise
known as the W. Jack Greer branch) will host its annual Dog Days of Summer
dog show. This is definitely the place to showcase your dog’s most
winning assets! Categories will include: biggest dog, smallest dog, longest
tail, shortest tail, best costume and best trick. There will also be a
very special presentation and demonstration by the Greenville Humane Society. The
show will begin at 10:00am on the lawn of the Mauldin Library. Entrants
must be at least 8 years of age (the human entrants, not the dog entrants),
and must be accompanied by an adult. Entrants (again, human entrants,
not dog entrants) are also required to have a signed waiver and release signed
by a parent or guardian, and each dog absolutely must have evidence of current
rabies immunization.

Here’s the deal: I’m about to start third grade at Hope Road
Academy, where my three older brothers rule. Will the Booker boys
shine so bright I’ll get lost in the light? Or will their extra-superstar-ness
help me fit in?

Whenever I stand in the corner, I close my eyes and see myself sitting
on a throne in a long white gown with a giant ruby crown on my head. I’m
telling all the people who serve me to polish the silver and scrub the floors
clean for the royal party.
Queen Rosseau My name is Marie Queen Rousseau. I live in a castle on 33rd Street right
across the street from the John Howard Housing Project. My father named me
Queen because he wanted everyone to know that his only daughter was special.
I have three brothers in college; they make a big deal out of me. They are
always sending me letters with special crown stickers.
