The following list is a guide to government information and services available online.

GovSearch -- GovSearch is a database of government people, programs and places. The service provides contact information and organization charts for federal, state, and municipal government executives and civilian program information. A supplemental database of other government facilities is included.


MarciveWEB (1976 - present) -- Catalog of U.S. Government Printing Office documents. Connects to many full-text documents. Other documents may be available at Hughes (Main) Library or other federal depository libraries. Available only at library locations.

Legislative and Law Information - Federal and State

  • Cornell Law School’s Legal Information Institute (Constitutions, Statutes, and Codes) -- Full text of federal and state constitutions, statutes, codes and related legislative information.

  • Guide to House and Senate Members (110th U. S. Congress) -- single-point access to data concerning House and Senate Members from various U.S. government publications including the Congressional Pictorial Directory, Congressional Biographical Directory. Search for individual congressional members by name, district, hometown. Search for groups of congressional members by state, party affiliation, or number of terms.

  • Thomas -- Library of Congress’s clearinghouse website for federal legislative information such as bills, resolutions, the Congressional Record as well as treaties, congressional schedules and calendars, committee information, and presidential nominations. Search bill status, summaries, and texts, public laws by law number, House and Senate Roll Call Votes, legislation by sponsor and more.


Federal Government Services

  • FAFSA (Free Application for Financial Student Aid) -- Find general student financial aid information, calculate your estimated financial aid eligibility, apply for aid online.

  • FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) -- Find information about declared disasters and emergencies, information about different types of disasters and hazards, how to apply for assistance, and about disaster planning, recovery, and rebuilding.

  • Forms.gov -- The U.S. government’s official hub for federal forms. Browse links to frequently used forms or search by keyword, form number, agency or subagency name, or by form name.

  • Grants.gov -- Central location for information for organizations on applying for federal grants in aid. Grants.gov is a central storehouse for information on over 1,000 grant programs and access to approximately $400 billion in annual awards.

  • GovBenefits -- Website for individuals to apply for government benefits and assistance with information on over 1,000 benefit and assistance programs.

  • Health and Human Services -- Browse a topical directory of health-related information about aging, disasters and emergencies, diseases and conditions, drugs and food, families and children, grants and funding, policies and regulations, safety and wellness, and specific populations. Explore links to the HHS family of agencies. Download Medicare and Medicaid forms.

  • Social Security Online -- Find information about your social security card and record, retirement planning benefits, Disability and Supplemental Security Income, social security news, online services and more.

  • Students.gov -- An official U.S. government web site designed for college students and their families. Find information about planning and financing your education, campus life, career development, military service, and more.

  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services -- Find information about citizenship, lawful permanent residency, family- and employment-related immigration, employment authorization, inter-country adoptions, asylum and refugee status, replacement immigration documents, and foreign student authorization. Download immigration forms.

  • U.S. Copyright Office -- Find legal, licensing, and registration information pertaining to copyright as well as news, publications, downloadable forms and more. Search records of registrations and ownership documents from 1978 to the present.

  • U.S. Patent and Trademark Office -- Find general patent and trademark information, search trademarks, file a trademark application online, or browse how-to guides, a glossary, news, links to other resources, and more.

  • U.S. Postal Service -- Find a zip code, calculate postage, print a shipping label, schedule a pickup, locate a post office, track and confirm a shipment, change your address, have your mail forwarded or held, and more.

  • USA.gov -- Web portal for official information and services from the U.S. government. Browse directory by topic or search by keyword. Also includes an alphabetical agency index and links to state, local, and tribal government resources.
