In the morning, I hear birds singing through the open window, begins
the young narrator in the marvelous new picture book, Birds, by
Kevin Henkes and Laura Dronzek. The young child continues and takes us
on a slow sensory tour of the wondrous ways that birds embellish our world. We
look and see the birds in their many colors, sizes, and shapes. We listen
and hear the birds singing alone and in gregarious groups. Watching birds
fly, we wonder and imagine how flying would feel. Birds inspire us and
incite our imagination. And Birds inspires
its readers with page after page of rich, enjoyable learning opportunities. The
finely crafted text and bright, bold illustrations honor the natural curiosity
and keen intelligence of young children. The outcome is a striking, engaging
delight that young children will want to enjoy again and again.
